Youth aging out of foster care tend to experience homelessness, unemployment, incarceration, and early parenting at a higher rate than the average young adult of the same age. A caring mentor in the life of a foster care youth can assist with career exploration, readiness and overall encouragement. Laurie Powers, Ph.D., and Summer Pommier, MSW, both from the Regional Research Institute for Human Services at Portland State University will discuss what they have learned about the outcomes of mentoring and strategies that can enhance the positive power of mentoring for young people in foster care. We will also hear from Alice Worrell, Project Manager in the Office of Workforce Development, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and Edward Cohn, President & CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio, regarding challenges and successes of the Connecting the Dots Mentoring initiative, which works to improve the educational, employment and independent living outcomes for foster care youth.
