Webinar – Girls of Color ROCK: How Mentoring Programs Help to Empower, Encourage and Energize Our Girls
Thursday, February 16, 2017
1:00 PM – 2:15 PM Eastern Time
From conflicts with peers to dating to self-esteem and identity issues – girls of color often come to us with hard questions and even harder life situations. Sometimes we have clear distinct answers; often we do not. But the success and power of mentoring programs for girls of color is not about one mentoring session or conversation. It is about building trust over time and allowing girls to express themselves, ask questions and know that they are heard, seen, and valued for who they are and what they believe.
Mentoring programs for girls of color help girls learn to make good decisions, allows them to break apart stereotypes and begin to find their place in the world. Issues often addressed in these programs, such as healthy relationships and lifestyle, positive self-image and racial/cultural identity, advocacy, and effective communication are difficult – even for adult women to navigate – but even more so for girls.
This panel discussion will be facilitated by Cheryl Howard – Neal, Director of Programs and Partnerships at MENTOR Illinois and will include panelists:
• Kelly Fair, Founder and Executive Director, Polished Pebbles
• Jamila Trimuel, Founder and Executive Director, Ladies of Virtue
