A variety of assets, from community supports to a young person’s own values, are key to positive youth development. Caring adults – including mentors – play a critical role in spurring the development of these positive assets. Join us to look at how mentoring relationships support a broad spectrum of positive youth development assets and how we can train mentors to see their role through this broader lens, ultimately strengthening educational and social-emotional outcomes.

Jim Conway, veteran youth worker and trainer at the Search Institute, will share background on the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets framework, one of the most widely used approaches to youth development. The model’s creation in 1990 has been described as a “sea change” in the world of adolescent development. We will also hear from Rebekah Holbrook, director of programs at the Virginia Mentoring Partnership, about how mentoring program leaders are trained to use the Developmental Assets framework in shaping their programs, and from mentoring program staff who use asset-building activities and approaches in their work with youth and mentors. Learn how a focus on assets can energize your program’s work with youth and get mentors engaged in providing experiences that young people need to succeed.
